India paves the way with inspiring jewelry
11/26/2007

The new Kabiri collection at London department store, Selfridges has given centre stage to Rajasthani manufacturer Amrapali of Jaipur.

According to the International Herald Tribune, the store has showcased the stunning neck jewelry which features details such as cuffs studded with diamonds and Bakelite.

Amrapali's owner, Rajiv Arora, told the newspaper that the intention of the collection was to "contemporize" ethnic Indian jewelry designs.

The rich cultural tapestry of Indian jewels has served as inspiration for Western jewelry over the past century.

Indeed in 1928, Sir Bhupinder of Singh commissioned a Cartier necklace, called Patiala, which was a platinum and diamond bib and has been hailed as "the most impressive necklace ever made by Cartier" by the newspaper.

Nathalie Kabiri, owner of Kabiri in Marylebone, commented: "So many of our customers are keen to embrace Indian jewelry because it seems they're helping to keep a tradition alive."
