Hirst's Platinum Exhibition Raises $250m
7/10/2007

Damien Hirst's solo art exhibition in London has generated $250 million in revenue, as enthusiasts have flocked to see his platinum and diamond skull.

At this stage, the piece de resistance remains unsold, with art specialists valuing it at around $100 million, but the lure of this outstanding platinum construction has been the primary reason for the exhibition's stunning success.

According to Reuters, the Beyond Belief show at London's White Cube Gallery has been on of the most lucrative in recent years, reflecting Hirst's unique standing as one of the greatest designers of his generation.

"The show has realised a quarter of a billion dollars worth of sales without the skull," a spokesman for the gallery remarked.

It is an astonishing achievement and many commentators still think the skull will sell. There has already been reported interest from pop icon George Michael and a number of other seasoned collectors are said to be keen on taking home this bizarre blend of art, horror and jewelry.

The platinum skull was cast from a 35-year-old 18th century European male and it is coated with some 8,601 diamonds. A single, large pink diamond in the forehead is worth an incredible $4 million, Hirst has revealed.

Interestingly, despite using flawless diamonds and platinum for the skull itself, Hirst chose to retain the original teeth, adding a typically eerie component to this remarkable work of art.
